In the 1990s the web started to become popular and the first websites were being created. Consequently, there were also sites dedicated to finding other pages. This type of website was called a directory. Directories were poorly organized and searches resulted in an immense list of results, not always relevant. Then, the directories started to include search fields: it was enough to type the terms of interest to receive a list with links that contained the word. These tools have been developed and some of them are now extinct, such as Altavista. Nowadays, Google is the company that has developed the most in the search engine sector and is used for 98% of the world's population.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, are the pages and links that are naturally displayed on search engines like Google. The attributes that search engines use to present these results to users are:

• Quality of content
• External and internal links
• Optimized images

Users trust Google's free results much more than paid results, so having a good position in search engines is a primary goal for many companies and for others this even ends up being the main goal.  


SEM

SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, is the result of another digital marketing strategy. Sponsored links, as they are also known, work by choosing keywords strategically designed to be related to what users are looking for in Google. This is a tool where you invest a certain amount of money to have more visibility in the search engines and the links are displayed above the results of the organic search, regardless of the age of your web page or company. For companies looking for quick results, the sponsored links strategy is an excellent way to attract people and customers interested in your products or services, however it is temporary.
